What can cause differences in weight when using a digital balance?

I have this practice question but I don’t understand it, so two students were asked to find the weight of a penny on a digital balance. The first student (mike) found the weight was 0.001 grams and the second student (mindy) found the weight was 4.3.

For mindy, I’d say she didn’t reset the values of the scale before measuring? But I don't know for mike.

The question asks what each student may have done incorrectly.

It would help to know the actual, correct weight of the penny.  It will certainly be greater than 0.001 grams.  It is generally between 2.5 g and 3 g.  So, Mindy either didn't reset or tare the balance, or she had other contaminants on the penny.  As for Mike, hard to imagine how he get such a low value. If the balance has settings, he may have set it to kg, or some other unit other than grams.
