The first number is three times the second number the second number is five less than two times the first what are my numbers

Let first no be x and 2nd number be y

 

Then x = 3y, and y=2x-5 substitute x for 3y

 

y=2(3y)-5=6y-5, y-6y=-5, -5y=-5, y=1 substitute y for 1 then

 

x=3(1)=3,  The solution is (x,y) or (3,1)
