Hi Joyce...from Rio Rancho, NM...connecting with your from Placitas, NM through Wyzant. Glad you connected with Wyzant to assist with getting a hold of your question. Hope I'm not too late, since you posted this question earlier in the week. I'm here to help.
Your question reads:
Describe the ways Apaches resisted white settlement.
What the question is asking of you, is to explain some of the ways the Apaches reacted to white settlers encroaching onto their homelands. So, basically, when the Apache saw the white people coming onto their lands which they have lived on, longer before 1774, how did they respond?
So, here are some ideas to begin to answer you question. I'm not going to give you the entire answer, but help you work to develop your question.
So, here goes:
To begin with, it would help if you could identify the different Apache Tribes, because there are more than one, each in several different states. With that said, the encroachment of 'white settlers' was different. Here in New Mexico, the 'white settlers' were the Spanish, as they encroached throughout NM, AZ and TX, looking for gold. Find out when this occurred and which tribes were affected.
Next, after the Mexican people won their independence from Spain, then the Mexican government tried to take their land. What time was this and what tribes were affected?
And lastly, when the United States acquired CA, AZ, NM and TX, as westward 'Manifest Destiny' moved other 'white settlers' into these areas, obviously, the Apache were affected and responded with some sort of resistance. What was that and when was that?
These are some ideas to work off of. If you are still having some issues or not getting good information, certainly you are welcome to contact me on Wyzant for further assistance.
I've given you a lot to begin with.
