The Nile and Amazon are fairly close in length, and exactly where a river begins can be surprisingly difficult to determine. Different definitions of a river's source can therefore produce different measurements.

One study that used satellite imagery and field investigations measured the Nile at 7,088 kilometers and the Amazon at 6,575 kilometers, making the Nile the longest. Other researchers have argued for different sources of the Amazon, however, which can change its measured length.

The Amazon is unquestionably the much larger river by discharge, which is the amount of water carried by the river. In fact, its discharge is about equal to that of the next seven largest rivers combined!
