The reason warm air is less dense than cold air is because the particles in the air are moving faster and are farther apart. The reason the warm, less dense air rises above the cold air is because a given volume of warm air weighs less than that same volume of cold air. Density is the relationship of mass to volume, and in 6th grade it is the weight to volume or weight to amount.
