Okay...I'm going to give you some bullet points on the 14 Amendment.
However, to help with answering your question, also find out who was President of the US when it was ratified. I will also give you a link to help you out.
- The 14 Amendment, Defining US National Citizenship, was ratified[do you know what ratification means? It would help you if you know what that means] in 1868. Find out who was President.
- It basically identifies who is a citizen of the United States and who isn't
- It also gives the rules on what defines a US citizen
- It also outlines what states can and cannot do in determining who a US citizen is.
- It requires states to recognized the rights of US citizens, that they have certain rights and 'due process' and that ALL US citizens are equal.
- There are other areas that the 14th Amendment covers, like how the population determines how Congress is represented and former slave owners don't own anything to former slaves.
- Even though this identifies who is and who isn't a US citizen, keep this in mind:
get the right to vote?
African Americans, though free weren't allowed to vote. Then
states passed laws determining what extra things African
Americans needed to do to vote. When did African Americans
get the right to vote without having to do all those extra
things?
Native American were not recognized as US citizens until 1924
and didn't get the right to vote until 1948.
So even though the 14 Amendment defined US citizenship to 'some' people it only applied to certain groups, mainly men, specifically anglo or white males.
