Communicative language teaching came once awareness of Applied Linguistics grew. In Applied Linguistics you often see how direct application of certain grammar and vocabulary allows you to communicate well in a given environment. There were certainly other factors involved, but this was one of the things that shifted the focus in teaching in recent years.
