To find the quotient of 45 and 3  6/7,

      (45) / (3  6/7)

      (45) / (27/7)              [convert the mixed number to an improper fraction]

       (45) * (7/27)         [to divide by fraction, invert denominator and multiply]

          315 / 27

            35 / 3               [optionally, reduce fraction]

           11  2/3            [convert improper fraction to mixed number]

45 divided by 3 6/7

Re write 3 6/7 as 27/7

Now you have 45 divided by 27/7 which is the same as (45 x 7)/27 = 315/27 = 11.67

 

Done another way:

3 6/7 = 3.857

45/3.857 = 11.67
