One of the primary life characteristics that require photosynthesis is metabolism, which involves obtaining and using energy for all chemical processes in a living organism. Photosynthesis is the method plants use for the first component of metabolism: obtaining energy. It allows plants to convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose. his occurs in the chloroplasts, where light dependent and light independent reactions occur. Light dependent reactions involve absorbing sunlight to split water molecules, isolating oxygen and created some energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. Light independent reactions use that ATP and NADPH to fix carbon dioxide from the air and build glucose molecules. This glucose stores chemical energy in its bonds. The plant can use this glucose immediately in cellular respiration to make ATP, convert it into starch for storage, or use it to build structural molecules like cellulose.
Photosynthesis supplies the chemical fuel that powers nearly all cellular activities in plants. Without it, plants would have no internal source of energy-rich molecules, and their metabolic processes, such as growth, repair, active transport, and reproduction, could not occur. Therefore, the process of photosynthesis is crucial for metabolism, one of the main characteristics of life.
