The definition between traditional culture depends upon one's own an individual's world view, family heritage, value system, religion, political ideological framework, level of education, wealth, and property, or simply put one place in time, location, and history. According to critics who has rank, status, and societal caste, determines one world view, and promotes a personal traditional view. Popular culture in terms of what is fashionable at the time, it if countries are ruling the resources, controlling the power at the time dictatorship, and whether or not it be popular among the majority of people. Thus, one sense of decorous taste in art, beaux arts, and music shapes one's artistic view. Is music traditional during peace? Are the people rushing for time, efficiency-oriented, expense-conscious, or computer-savy or military members, or are the member color-experimenters, or Dixieland Southerners, and sports zealots? Popular culture determines upon what language a group shares in politics, art, music, and literary genre of literature a group likes.fantasy fiction, natural beauty, or light or dark a group promotes.

Culture is the art, values, customs, entertainment, etc. which gives communities life and identity. A simple example would the practice of setting up and decorating Christmas trees in some countries as the year gets closer to Dec. 25th. Popular culture then is cultural practices which are in vogue (i.e. popular) and usually expressed by celebrities and their fans. In African American communities, an example of this could be hip-hop music or shows on BET. Traditional culture consists of those things which have generationally been passed down and are considered the norm. An example of this would be attending traditionally Black churches on Sundays. That said the two types of culture can intersect with pop culture becoming part of or even replacing traditional culture. Again, think of hip-hop or rap music which, though meeting the definition of pop culture, has had continued success for multiple decades. The question becomes when does something become "traditional"?01/19/24
