In 1984, Winston's job at the Ministry of Truth is to change, or in many cases, delete history. He often removes pictures and all evidence of certain people from newspapers. This is basically done to remove all evidence that the person ever existed.

There have been real examples of this in the past. Stalin, for example, ordered the removal of certain "enemies" from official photographs.
