On her daily homework assignments, Gina has earned the maximum score of 10 on 15 out of 40 days. The mode of her scores is 7 and her median is 9. Assuming scores are whole numbers, what is the least her mean could be? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

10 on 15;

median of 40 scores is 9 means the average of the 20th and 21st is 9; if it is 10 and 8, then there would be 20 10s; lower mean if 6 9s; we have accounted for 21 numbers, leaving 19.  Mode is 7, so there must be 16 7s.  3 numbers left, let them all be 0s.

 

(3*0 + 16*7 + 6 * 9 + 15 * 10)/40 = 7.9
