About Tom

I have a Master's Degree in Statistics from Rice University. I have many years of experience as a practicing statistician. I have math teaching experience, having taught everything from eighth-grade math to university statistics. In addition, I have extensive tutoring experience in numerous mathematical fields.

What I enjoy most about tutoring is the opportunity to work one on one with you and see your happiness when you have successfully learned new material.

I have taught and tutored all of these subjects, and as a practicing statistician, I have applied this knowledge in the work world. I am able to grasp new material quite quickly and excel in explaining it.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have both taught and tutored Algebra 1. I have excellent mathematical skills, which comes in handy in teaching any mathematical subject. I am able to understand why a student is having difficulties and work towards a solution. This is especially important in Algebra I, which requires a mastery of all previous math.

Algebra 2

I have taught and tutored Algebra 2. I will fill any gaps in your understanding of algebra as we get you to master Algebra 2.

Calculus

I have taught and tutored Calculus. I scored a 5 on the Calculus BC AP exam and a perfect score on the actuarial exam in Calculus.

Geometry

I have tutored geometry quite a bit. Keys to success in geometry include understanding the material, having confidence, being logical and careful, and drawing whenever possible. This is why tutoring can be so helpful. I look forward to working with you.

Precalculus

My scores on such tests as the BC Calculus exam (I made a 5), the actuarial exam in Calculus (I made a 10, the highest score), and my graduate degree in Statistics demonstrate my math skills.

Probability

I have taught Probability as part of statistics classes. In addition, I have taken advanced probability classes and tutored probability. I find the problems to be fun and hope you do--they tend to require a lot of logical thinking and will prepare you for the World Series of Poker!

SAS

I have worked with SAS as a practicing statistician for many years. I have great skill with Base SAS, Sas Stat, the Macro Language, etc. I look forward to hearing from you.

Statistics

I have taught Statistics at the university level and have tutored students from high school through graduate school in the subject. I have been a practicing Statistician for much of my professional life. I find that students' problems with Statistics tend to be caused by a lack of understanding and confidence in a totally new subject and look forward to helping you with this and ensuring your mastery of the subject.

Trigonometry

I have tutored extensively in Trigonometry.

Knowledgeable and Patient

Tom helped me prepare for my upcoming Calculus BC test. We worked a wide variety of problems that involved calculating derivatives, understanding the definition as a limit of a difference ratio, and finding tangent lines, applying the various rules (power, product, quotient, chain rule, etc., trig functions), dealing with fractional powers, etc. Tom was very patient and explained everything very
