First of all, are there any examples of the global economy causing regional cultural traits to disappear? Which ones? Culture loss is never a good thing in and of itself.
Positive effects of homogenization:
- things get done faster
- there's a common, agreed upon way of doing things (less strife in society)
Negative effects of homogenization:
- outside groups are left out of any decision-making processes and are left unrepresented
- less innovation as different cultures bring different ideas
So, is it better to have a heterogenous or homogenous society? Well, that depends on what you think. Both can be incredibly successful. For example, heterogenous societies include the UK, Germany, and Canada. Not to mention the USA and China. On the other hand, homogenous societies include the likes of Japan, Korea, and until rather recently, the Scandinavian countries.
