I love the explanation by David, especially the contradiction part.

 

As a math person, there ARE absolutes, but the general phrase is used as he said.

 

Another way of thinking about is is the expression "there is an exception to every rule".

"There are no absolutes" is a phrase used in a variety of contexts to favor opinion, politics, or feelings over facts and objective observations.

 

The applications regard:  right/wrong,  best, worst, ... etc.

 

If a person believes that "there are no absolutes," they reject sayings like "all ..." or "none ..." or "never ..." or "always ..."

They prefer to let each person decide for himself or herself what is true or false, best or worst, etc.

 

There is a very obvious flaw with the statement, "there are no absolutes" -- the word, "no," which is absolute.  Thus, a person who says "there are no absolutes" just contradicted himself/herself.
