King Arthur's knights use a catapult to launch a rock from their vantage point on top of the castle wall, 12m above the moat.  The rock is launched at a speed of 25m/s & an angle of 30° above the horizontal.  How far from the castle wall does the launched rock hit the ground?

V_0y= V₀sinθ = 25 sin 30 =25/2

y = V_0yt - 1/2 gt²   y = -12 m because the vantage point is at height zero and distance below is negative

 

-12 = 25/2 t -1/2 * 9.8 t²

-24 = 25t -9.8t²

 

9.8 t² - 25t  - 24 =0

t = (25± √(25² - 4*9.8* -24))/2*9.8

  =(25 ± √1565.8)/19.6 = (25 ± 39.57)/19.6, only the positive solution has physical meaning

 

t = (25+39.57)/19.6 = 3.29 seconds

 

X = V_0xt = 25cos30*3.29 = 71.2 m

 

The rock hit the ground 71.2 m from the base of the castle wall
