Bell high school is planning to have their prom at Catalina island. All guest have to be transported by boat to their island. The school is prepared to take 805 guests and will be renting 40 boats. Some of the boats are small and some are big. Each small boat carries 10 guests and each large boats carries 25. How many of each size boat is the school renting to be able to take exactly 805 guests.

Step One: Create Let Statements

Let x= the number of big boats 

Let 40-x= the number of small boats

Step Two: Create an equation

25x+10(40-x)=805 Distribute 

25x+400-10x=805 Combine like terms

15x=405 Divide both sides by 15

x=27

∴There are 27 big boats and 13 small boats.
