About Starlyte

I graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York. Tutoring and mentoring are passions of mine. Throughout college, I served as a tutor in Biology, Psychology, English, and SAT prep. As a Horace Mann High School student, I also previously tutored Riverdale residents. My years of experience have taught me how to be flexible and how to adapt to individual student needs.

My goal is to provide the academic support essential for you to excel in your coursework, to connect you to the appropriate resources, and to encourage consistent engagement with the subject. I create a safe space in which you are encouraged to ask questions, to think critically, and to problem solve. By identifying and addressing weak points of understanding, I will work to teach you how to break down difficult problems into understandable solutions. I look forward to challenging your understanding of your coursework and equipping you with the fundamental building blocks necessary for you to master the material.

Psychology: I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Columbia University in The City of New York. My area of focus includes The Unconscious Mind, Social Cognition and Emotion, Social Personality and Development, and Behavior. I look forward to sharing the study methods and learning techniques that led me to success.

Biology: I completed the Pre-Medical student requirements including Biology, Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and all accompanying labs. As a tutor, I apply the in-depth knowledge that I have accumulated through these college courses (and through subsequent work experience as a research assistant in Columbia's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center and Neurobiology Laboratories).

English: In college, I excelled in my English courses, including Literature Humanities I & II, Contemporary Civilizations I & II, and University Writing. I have served as an editor, columnist, and writing tutor for both The Journal of Global Health and Model Congress' Political Magazine.
I work with both students and professionals, writing and editing a wide range of subjects (traditional English essays, reviews, scientific publications, lab reports, etc). I also work with students to strengthen grammar, to build vocabulary, and to expand understanding of the English language. By working with literary text, I teach students how to pick out key themes, to engage in active discussion about the plot, and to analyze the development of characters. My background is primarily English and Spanish.

Summary: My primary focus is to open up your understanding of the subject so that you may develop a love for learning. I enjoy making lesson plans, worksheets, and summaries for students to absorb the material.

I encourage you to seek help before you fall far behind in the material! But do not worry. I am willing to help you at all stages of the learning process. By utilizing a wide range of resources including animations, analogies, and supplementary practice problems, I will work with you to strengthen your academic skills. Together, we will methodically review the material in order for you to excel in your coursework.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I love Art History. As an AP Art History student, I enjoyed learning about different cultures through art, writing about scholarly interpretations and ongoing debates, and visiting masterpieces at nearby museums (The MET, Guggenheim, and Cloisters). I carried this same enthusiasm into college as I took a number of courses including African Art, Indian Art, and Masterpieces of Western Art and Architecture. I will help you write clearly, read carefully, and develop an understanding of the past through the visual expressions that members of ancient societies have left behind.

Biology

As a Pre-Medical student, I have been trained in Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, and Biochemistry. Biology can be an overwhelming subject because of the massive amount of information we are expected to absorb. My strategy, therefore, is to teach students how to process the material and to break down complex ideas into smaller, understandable concepts and patterns. By sharing the strategies that I have developed through my own trial and error study processes, I will equip you with the skills you need to master the material.

English

I am a native English speaker, and have tutored a number of students in SAT Critical Reading, SAT Writing, ACT English, and ACT Writing. Vocabulary, grammar, and spelling play a significant part in both academic and professional success. I tailor lessons to students' specific objectives, levels of proficiency, and learning styles. I work to instill fundamental rules, reinforced by examples, that will allow students to achieve mastery of the subject.

As an editor, I will proofread your pieces (college admissions essays, lab reports, professional writing) in order to ensure that your ideas are best communicated to the reader. I will also help you create cover letters and resumes, highlighting your strengths and experiences.

PSAT

To prepare students for the PSAT, SAT, and ACT, I teach by using sample problems that are similar to the test questions. This allows me to identify weak points of understanding, so that I may teach the appropriate subject matter (grammar, vocabulary, math concepts). My goal is to ensure mastery of the material and strong performance on the easy, medium, and difficult sections of the test.

I not only teach students the important underlying concepts, but also teach them how to take the test. By perfecting timing strategies, process of elimination, and identification of themes, I enable students to maximize their scores.

Psychology

As a Psychology major, I gained experience in studying for a variety of subjects including Animal Behavior, Evolution of Cognition, and Personality Development. I will share with you a variety of methods to help you remember the information. I am dedicated to teaching you how to spot the most important details in your readings, how to create organized study summaries, and how to draw diagrams that will allow you to process and retain the material.

Public Speaking

Debate is a passion of mine. In high school, I served as President of The Horace Mann Model Congress Debate Team. In college, I held the position of President of The Columbia University Model Congress Debate Team for two years. I genuinely enjoy forming arguments, finding evidence, and writing speeches. I have coached students in debate, formal presentation, and conducting conversations (conference talks). I encourage students to find their own voices, utilize available resources, and practice the material until they are confident with their messages.

For many of us, public speaking is a nerve-racking challenge. I will guide you through the processes of research, writing, and speaking (grammar, pacing, style) in order to help you become an informative, intriguing, and persuasive speaker.

Study Skills

As a tutor for over seven years, I have taught students both what to learn and how to learn. I will show you core strategies for taking tests, keeping notes, and processing information. Practicing good organization and time management will make it easier for you to recall information, comprehend material, and improve academic performance. Let me help you develop these fundamental skills to give you an academic boost!
