Julie wants to make bows to give as presents. She buys 1/2 yd of red ribbon and 3/4 yd of green. If each bow is 1/8 yd how many bows can she make?

Step One: Write our Givens

1/2 yard = the amount of red ribbon

3/4 yard = the amount of green ribbon

 

Step Two: Find the total amount of ribbon. 

Red ribbon + Green ribbon = Total ribbon

(1/2)+(3/4)=Total yards of ribbon

(2/4)+(3/4)=Total yards of ribbon Use a common denominator to add fractions

(5/4)=Total yards of ribbon

 

Step Three: Find how many bows she can make using the total amount of ribbon.

Assuming that y is the amount of bows she can make,

(y/8)=(5/4) Cross multiply

4y=40 Divide both sides by 4

y=10

∴She can make 10 ribbons.
