Hi Caitlyn,
Edward gave a big hint, "Rate of change is another way of saying slope."
For your problem, convert the equation to slope-intercept form, y = mx + b.
- 8x - 4y = 10 - 2x + 6y add 4y to each side
- 8x = 10 - 2x + 10y now add 2x to each side
- 6x = 10 + 10y now add - 10 to each side
- 6x - 10 = 10y reverse the equation, to list the 'y' on the left
10y = - 6x - 10 divide each term by 10
y = (-6/10)x - 1 simplify the fraction
y = (-3/5)x - 1 now that the formula is in 'slope-intercept form', you can see the slope is - 3/5
Remember Edward's hint: You need the 'rate' and you found the slope...
Hope this helps, Caitlyn,
Mary Ann
