This (anecdotally) is the most stressful question medical students face when studying for USMLE 1/2. Preparing to study can feel daunting, and students can feel pressured to give in and "do everything." Truthfully, the best way to study for the USMLE begins well before dedicated. I tell students to identify the following:
1) what kind of learners they are (audio, visual, mixed)
2) their subject weaknesses
3) what they want their study period to look like
4) what their long term goals are
Then, I'd suggest meeting with the learning specialist at your medical school (or a tutor!). They can offer helpful advice and feedback on your study plan. From my experience, students have an easier time studying for Step 1/2 when they incorporate long-term recall method. Some use anki for space repetition, and others make schedules - it's really up to what works best for you.
Additionally, you should start gathering data on your performance as early as possible. I would recommend that you take a sample exam every week/every other week. This isn't to see if you're "test-ready" - it's to help hone in on key USMLE topics!
I hope that helped. Best of luck studying!
