Exams are testing of your understanding of the material AND how well you can keep track of time. Your mind might go blank when you see a question on the exam that you can usually pass easily, and that makes you lose time during the exam. Don't panic! It happens to everyone! The most important thing is to keep moving and remind yourself that you DO know the material. Here are four helpful strategies to staying on track and finishing your exam on time:
- Count the questions: Sometimes, knowing how many questions there are on the exam, and how much time you have to answer them all, makes a big difference. Don't spend too much time on each question if you know there are still many more.
- Don't be afraid to Skip: If you see a question you don't know, skip it and come back to it later. You might remember how to do it later during the test. Even if you have to skip a few questions, you can always come back to them once you answer the questions you DO remember.
- Answer everything: Even if you can't remember how to answer a question, any answer is better than no answer. Before the test ends, make sure you have put down at least your best guess for every question. It could save you a lot of points!
- Watch the clock: If you know you have a hard time keeping track of time during an exam, bring a watch, or ask the teacher to start a timer for the class that everyone can see. That way, you will always know how much time is left, and if you have time to double check answers.
