Editing contains so many layers, therefore, in order to be a great editor in today's world one must be knowledgeable of the following types of editing:
Developmental editing: This is where the editor reviews the overall document, checking whether it fulfills it's overall purpose.
Line editing: This is the sentence level edit that scrutinizes text for clarity and aims to eliminate jargon.
Copy editing: This is the editing style that focuses on the style guide, fact-checking, verifying external links, grammar and spelling.
Fact-checking: Fact checking is something every editor should do but you'll mostly find the demand in scientific publications, in-depth journalistic investigations, and copyediting.
Proofreading: This is the last step in the editing process where the minor errors are caught such as typos, spacing, spelling, and punctuation inconsistencies.
Hope this helps!
