Students that are deciding to take AP Studio Art in high school have several choices. Depending on the school and the classes they offer, they could take one or all of the following AP Studio Art exams:
- 2D Art and Design
- 3D Art Design
- Drawing
They all fall under AP Studio Art. Of the three, depending on the type of artist they are, 2D Art and Design is probably the easiest. Drawing portfolio reviewers that score the exam score students higher when they have more focused line work and drawings that demonstrate fine attention to detail. If you are an ideas person, and have less drawing examples under your belt, I'd recommend taking 2D Art and Design first before taking Drawing. If you are planning on focusing on AP in Drawing and you are unsure of your skill level I'd spend more time honing in on the type of drawings, subject matter and materials you enjoy using and then work towards improving those skills. Then showing your examples to your AP Art teacher for their guidance.
All of my Drawing AP and 2D Art and Design students have passed where I teach high school. Best of luck! Because you are being proactive and discovering more tells me you are on your way to success.
