What is my approach to teaching writing?

In writing, my goal is to help students incorporate their authentic voices into their writing assignments and creative work. I work with students to build confidence in their perspectives, ideas, and voices so that they can express themselves on the page. For creative writing, I teach fiction writing, memoir, and poetry. We explore character development, establishing setting, plot, and conflict, and finding the joy and confidence in your own voice. For essays, we work on short and long-form essays, addressing analytic, interpretative, and critical composition and incorporating a personal point of view.

Lessons are individualized for each student.

A teacher is the student's guide to knowledge, self-expression, self-confidence, identity, culture, demographics, facts, fantasy, and the teacher acts as a mirror of culture or voice. In short, the teacher's duty as a mentor is to be a role model.
