If I have my own idea for a topic, can I use it in my college essay application?

The short answer is YES. The last prompt on the Common Application is always something like "write about something (anything) that is important to you." But there is a BUT. Your goal is to tell an anecdote that reveals something about you and your unique strengths. Your story should show growth ... that is, something you realized or learned along the way. Think about what colleges are looking for (determination, resilience, problem solving skills, a mind open to new ideas, a love of learning, and community engagement.) Stories that showcase any of these are a good choice. Keep in mind that ideally your story should be from the last few years and should highlight who you are now with examples of your actions/thoughts; don't get stuck in a story from your childhood. Your story does not need to be about your major or area of study. There are usually some shorter essay questions that ask you for that information, and you do not want to repeat yourself.
