If I have my own idea for a topic, can I use it in my college essay application?

Previous responses to this question are sound and very useful! I would like to add that, when you choose your own topic, make sure that you can relate that topic to your chosen course of study. What does that topic mean to you in terms of your studies and career goals? For instance, is your chosen program going to support and prepare you to handle that topic as a professional, down the road? I think that relevance is key, in admissions essays, and also, clarity. Can you clearly outline and define your plans to the admissions office, and explain how you to plan to account for necessary adjustments as you proceed? It depends! If the college application says you can write about a topic of your own choosing, go for it. Make sure to consider your audience.
