In biological classification, humans are indeed categorized as animals. The term "animal" encompasses a broad range of multicellular organisms, including humans, dogs, cats, and various other species. While humans possess unique cognitive abilities and cultural characteristics that distinguish us from other animals, biologically, we share many fundamental traits and genetic similarities with other members of the animal kingdom. Therefore, from a taxonomic perspective, humans fall within the classification of animals, albeit with distinct features that set us apart.

Humans are one type of animal. The word "animals" is simply a category of living beings. Try thinking about this in a different way. Imagine the categories berries, fruit, and food. All berries are fruits, but not all fruits are berries. Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are all berries AND are all fruits. Apples, kiwis, and oranges are all fruits, but they're definitely not berries. Additionally, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, apples, kiwis, and oranges are fruits AND food. Pasta is a food, but it isn't a fruit. Now, switch the language to the categories humans, animals, and living things. All humans are animals, but not all animals are humans. You, the President, and Beyonce are all humans AND animals. Dogs, cats, and giraffes are all animals, but they're definitely not humans. Additionally, you, the President, Beyonce, dogs, cats, and giraffes are animals AND living things. A tree is a living thing, but it isn't an animal. I hope this helps!04/23/24

Would you say classifying a human as an animal is the same definition as the term animals in colloquial conversation meaning other non human animals?05/08/24

Thanks! So you’re saying humans and animals aren’t exactly the same they’re different? Even though for classification purposes humans are animals?04/21/24
