For beginners, I teach this standard 5-paragraph structure. Teachers should become model architects and build a sturdy foundation before teaching any adventurous and creative mishaps; be steady, and write predictable prose.
Formulaic Writing Instruction
Writing products should be unique to the individual and illustrate the author's own creative voice. With that in mind, should novice writers learn to organize their work using specific writing formulas?

As a firm believer in the flexibility inherent in any language and the development of each writer's creative voice, I do see the benefit of mastering a writing formula before branching out into more complex and personalized approaches to a specific genre. For example, I teach the standard 5-paragraph essay using a very structured graphic organizer that emphasizes a hook, a three-prong thesis statement, topic sentences, and clincher statements. While more intermediate to advanced writers can (and should) stray from this mechanistic formula, when a student is first introduced to the essay the visible pattern provided in a graphic organizer reduces stress and assists them in gaining a basic understanding of the purpose and structure of the genre. Once a student is comfortable and proficient with the basics, they can modify the structure to meet their own needs and illustrate their own voice.
