This can be setup as a proportion problem and easily solved by the cross product. We know that Vin reads 10 pages in 12 minutes and the rate of reading the pages does not change. The first fraction is:
12 minutes
10 pages
The second fraction is what we are trying to find:
(How many minutes)
35 pages
Notice if I have minutes in the numerator of the first fraction, I need to have minutes in the numerator (on top) of the second fraction. I could have put pages on top of both fractions and still solved the problem. So lets do the next step. Put the first and second fraction equal to each other forming the proportion.
12 minutes = (How many minutes)
10 pages 35 pages
This gives 12 X 35 = 10 X (How many minutes) or 420 = 10 X (How many minutes).
Divide both sides by 10 and we have 42 for (How many minutes). Or we just say it takes 42 minutes to read 35 pages.
