Before 9/11, people in the US were focused on the traumatic experiences of people in war torn countries, never believing something like that could happen here. Stories on the news and online were just that, stories. The attacks on 9/11 brought to light the vulnerability of American security infrastructure. Americans who complained before of stringent security measures when visiting other countries, now had to face the realities of why those measures were in place. The presence of armed militia, bomb sniffing dogs, restrictions on carrying liquids on planes, and body scans at TSA checkpoints have become commonplace since that day. None of those things existed to this degree before 9/11.
