Erosion is often confused with weathering. Weathering is the breakdown of material, either by chemical or physical processes. Once broken down, erosion is the mechanism that moves this weathered material. Erosion consists of the 3 Ws and the 2 Gs. Water, wind, and waves will modify the material to be rounder, smoother and smaller. The 3 Ws cause material to be layered and sorted. In comparison, the 2 Gs include gravity and glaciers. Material transported by the 2 Gs are angular, rough, not layered and not sorted. Erosion from gravity is often called mass movement and includes mudslides, landslides, rockfalls, debris flows, etc.
