I've been teaching earth science and tutoring for 18 years. I have had great success with my students for the earth science regents over the years. One of the reasons is because I make up songs and sayings that really permeate. There have been many times over the years that a student will raise their hand during the regents and say, "Ms. C, it's the song!" And just like that, they have the answer to the question. I help you to break apart the question, understand the language, and give test taking strategies to build your confidence. If you are willing to take a chance at learning in a different way, it might just be the fix you've been looking for.
What's really cool about me as your tutor is that I bring in real life experience. I was a geologist for 15 years before I became a tutor. I worked at hazardous waste sites where I performed soil and water investigations. Then I evaluated the data and helped design cleanups for these sites. Through this employment, I traveled extensively throughout the US. In addition, I have gone hiking and rock climbing in numerous national parks including Yosemite, The Tetons, Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, Sequoia, Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef etc. I usually run into trouble at the airport when it is a scramble to balance the weight of the luggage from all the rock samples I collect!
Besides bringing in this outside experience into the lessons, I have a series of songs and mnemonic devices that help students understand topics more thoroughly. I have really terrific regents results every year. I know you'll feel more secure after we meet a few times.
I teach students with special needs in my classes. I had a student one year with very pronounced Tourette's syndrome. The parent was advised to have me as their son's teacher because I was able to help him relax. I have privately tutored numerous students with special needs and have been able to help them improve their scores. Many have passed the regents with 65 rather than 55!
I also teach night school where many of the participants have learning challenges. In the night school arena, it's easier to help these students because they get one on one assistance.
When you meet with me, you will find someone who is very patient, a bit theatrical, and extremely caring. I will help you overcome your test anxiety. You will learn how to take apart a question so you know what it is really asking for. You'll see how using colored pencils and highlighters can make a big difference in understanding. Thank you! My daughter was comfortable with her and I feel she is the right person to help her with passing the earth science regrnts this summer. After the first lesson my daughter was confident she could pass.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having been in the environmental field for 15 years prior to becoming a teacher is quite an asset. I am also certified in AP environmental science by the College Board. This diverse experience makes a valuable duet when assisting students with ecology concepts.
I have both BS and MS degrees in geology. I was an environmental geologist for 15 years before I began teaching earth science. Having this background in geology makes it much easier to convey complex information. Geology covers a quarter of the year's material.

Having taught earth science for 17 years, I have my finger on the pulse of how the regents exam is evolving. I have helped students, both regular ed and special needs, improve their scores. This is achieved through creative songs, mnemonic devices, and heavy duty reference tables work.
I am qualified to tutor special needs students for several reasons. First, I teach special education students on a daily basis in my class. Second, I have a science support class with special education students that essentially receive one on one assistance. Third, I have successfully tutored students with special needs for the earth science regents. This exam is notoriously a challenge for all students, and being able to have students with special needs pass is a testimony to my success rate with students.
