Why are animal cells classified as Eukaryotic cells

Eukaryotic cells are defined by the presence of a membranous nucleus, as well as membrane bound organelles. Animal cells, with the exception of red blood cells, contain at least one nucleus, in addition to many membrane bound organelles (mitochondria, for example). As such, animal cells fit the definition of eukaryotes.

What helps define an eukaryotic is the presence of various particular organelles. Some of the important ones include are a nucleus and mitochondria.

 

Prokaryotes--single-celled organisms--tend to lack these.  They may have a nucleoid, but that does not have a surrounding membrane. Mitochondria--the organelle that provides a cell chemical energy--are also lacking in prokaryotes.*

 

*disclaimer: some eukaryotes don't have mitochondria, but those tend to be very rare and again very simple organisms.
