In grammar/writing, an apostrophe represents two main ideas: possession and contraction.
- Contraction: to show the omission of one or more letters in a contraction (examples: "it is = it's" or "do not = don't")
- Possession: to show ownership or singular possession of a noun (examples: "a boy's toy" or "the mom's purse")
- Possession: when nouns end with the letter "s" you can show ownership two ways: either by adding 's or s' (examples: "the boss's rules" or "Mr Greens' pen")
