The smallest component of a living entity is a cell. An organism is any living creature, whether it is composed of one cell (such as bacteria) or many cells (such as a human). Living things have a high degree of organization, which means they have coordinated, specialized parts. Cells, which are regarded as the basic building blocks of life, make up every living thing. Even one-celled organisms are complex. The same four major types of organic molecules—nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids—make up every cell in the body. When cells divide, hereditary information (DNA) is transferred from one cell to the next. In creatures of similar species, all cells essentially have the same chemical make-up.
