Hi Victoria H.,
He (or she, have you speciated /sexed yet?) is defending feeding territory, and possibly later nesting territory as well. Sitting expends less energy than flying, especially for a bird which lives on the edge of survival.
You, inside your house, are similarly defending feeding, shelter, and possibly also Instagram-playing territory.

Thank you for that helpful answer. I was afraid bird was injured and could not fly. I'm relieved! Now I am putting up another feeder around the corner because that hummer won't let any other bird--except one tiny one--come and feed there. Maybe he's picked her out for a mate?01/12/23
