If you look up the corticospinal tract, you'll get a better understanding of the pathway involved in voluntary motor function. This pathway descends from the cerebral cortex, passes through the internal capsule, and eventually into the brainstem where they form the pyramids of the medulla then cross to opposite sides to send nerves down the corticospinal tract of the spine on either side. Since these fibers are transmitting motor signals from the bilateral cortex regions and then cross to supply the rest of the body, it creates a contralateral cortex control of the body.
