In respect to Islam, modernism typically refers to the Muslim response to large societal changes, particularly in the West, that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many religions had very strong reactions to these changes, and Islam was no exception! Muslim leaders were forced to grapple with how values of democracy and equality fit with Islamic practices and traditions. In response to modernism, religions typically found themselves split on whether it was better to reconcile their faith with their circumstances or to reinforce their traditional way of life.
