Why is the protein botulin considered to be a poison?

Botulism works by preventing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from being released into the synaptic junction. Acetylcholine is responsible for many things such as muscle contraction. While this is great to relax isolated tissue, such as in botox injections, it is not good systemically. This can cause paralysis of the body and the inability to breath. Thus making it a poison.
