Elites uphold stratification through the stifling of ideas and information as well as by the use of force. Elites maintain their relevance by influencing ideas and information. The common people's access to information is restricted and censored so that they lack sufficient knowledge and are unable to take the required steps to turn the tables. They are unable to become powerful, amass cash from them, or remove them from favourable positions due to their information hoarding. Another strategy for preserving the status quo is enforcement. They utilize force to stop the common people from claiming their rights when they appear to be enlightened and want a piece of the action or a change in the status quo.
