Now, consider the following statistic: The United Nations predicts that by 2025 wealthy societies will grow by 57 million people.

While poor societies will grow by 1.7 billion people.

What are the possible reasons for this growth pattern? What are the consequences
of this growth pattern?

Kel M.

According to the Demographic Transition Model, there are 5 stages of development. In Stage 1, societies begin with high rates of birth and death. Their populations are stable--people have many children, but lots of people die before age 5. As industrial development begins in Stage 2, death rates fall rapidly, but birth rates remain high. Thus, population increases rapidly. In Stage 3, birth rates start to fall, but death rates have fallen so far that the population continues growing in spite of lower birth rates. It is not until Stage 4 that birth rates drop as low as death rates--at that point, the population stabilizes. In Stage 5, the population may even begin to fall. Therefore, less developed countries will grow much faster than more developed faster. Furthermore, the level of consumption by rich countries is unsustainable--a relatively small population of rich consumers requires a large underclass to sustain itself.
