Ashton has $3.75 in quarters and nickles in her car. The number of nickles is three more than the number of quarters. How many of each type of coin does she have?

Hello, thank you for taking the time to post your question!
The key to solving an equation like this is getting the expression set up properly based on the information given in the question … so based on that we have
0.25Q + 0.05N = 3.75
N = Q + 3
So I would plug the second equation back into the first equation to solve for the value of Q
0.25Q + 0.05(Q + 3) = 3.75
0.30Q + 0.15 = 3.75
0.30Q = 3.60
Q = 3.60 / 0.30 = 12
Which means that
N = 12 + 3 = 15
So in sum she has 12 quarters and 15 nickels
I hope that helps get you moving in the right direction! Feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions beyond that :)

Mathematics Teacher - NCLB Highly Qualified
q represents the number of quarters
q + 3 represents the number or nickels
0.25q + 0.05(q + 3) = 3.75
Casn you solve for q and answer?
