I was wondering how did you get the 200 mL? I was confused while figuring it out.

The 200 mls is a result of the calculation of (x ml)(5%) = (1000 ml)(1%). This is essentially V1M1 = V2M2 or V1C1 = V2C2 which they teach in chemistry class. The algebraic solution is x = 200 mls. Another way to do it if you don't care for algebra is as follows: you are going from 5% to 1% and that is a 5-fold dilution. If you want 1000 mls, then 1/5 of that (5 fold) is 200 mls. Hope that explains it.
