A bag contains 8 black marbles, 16 white marbles, 14 red marbles, and 10 green marbles. A marble is drawn at random from the bag.


What is the probability that the marble drawn will not be white?

Joseph, this is simpler than it seems, I promise!

 

How many marbles are not white?  We have 14 red and 10 green, so 24.  How many marbles are there altogether? Add the 16 white and we get 40.

 

So, our probability is 24/40.  We always reduce this to lowest terms, though, so the answer is 3/5.
