Integers word problem

Missys father bought her an 18 foot board to cut into shelves for her bedroom. Missy plans to cut the boards into 6 equal size lengths for her shelves. The saw blade that missy will use to cut the board will change the length of the board by -0.1875 inches for each cut. Explain how this will affect the length of the board.

Looks like the question wasn't asking for the length of each shelf, just how the length of the board is affected by the cuts. Can visually see from the diagram how the 5 cuts decrease the length by .9375in.

Thank you so much! We found the (x). However I’m not understanding the 5 cuts?

You're welcome! Well, what you would do is start on the left end (or other end if you prefer). Make your first cut x inches (or feet if you have converted to feet) from the end. Continue with your next cut x inches from your last cut. Keep doing this until you have your 6 pieces. Hope this answers what you were asking.

Or perhaps you were wondering how to determine the number of cuts you make? If you need 6 equal pieces, you need to make 6-1 = 5 cuts. In general if you need n equal pieces, then make n-1 cuts.

On my diagram, there are five cuts (of 0.1875), so there is 17.0625 inches of board left for 6 equal-sized shelves. So, how in the world is Missy going to position the saw to get shelves of length 2.84375 inches ????? NOTE: If Missy cuts every 3 inches, the shelves won't be the same length !!
