Personal statements are tricky--yes, you do want yours to stand out from the competition but at the same time, you do not want to place yourself so apart from the normal cohort. The beginning and the end are the most crucial. If you cannot craft an engaging beginning to hook your readers, you will be passed by. First impressions in writing and in public speaking determine if a reader or audience member is going to engage with you or even be interested in what you have to offer. You need to catch their attention from the start.
