How do I solve 2x+4=18?

Also,

Who cares?

Why in the world does this matter?

And when will I ever use this?

Marcos O.

It is quite simple. All you have to do is isolate the X on one side of the equality. To do that, you carry out the same operation on both sides of the equality to keep it valid (as equality). Subtract 4 from bo sides and divide both sides by 2. The answer is X= 7. You use this unconsciously every day, and as your decisions become more complex and important, you will use it more and more consciously. For example, every time you confront a choice among several alternatives, to make the best decision for you, you need to weigh each alternative against your goals, whatever they are. You will assess how much each choice offers, you will asses what chance of success each alternative gives you, and you will assess the cost of choosing the wrong one. Then you make an intelligent decision. Like which way to drive to an interview (or a date), what car to buy? what home to buy? who to marry or live with? This is all MATH, and algebra IS the language of MATH. It is important.
