asked 08/15/22Food is broken down and consumed by chemical process in an organisms body to obtain energy
1 Expert Answer
The process you are describing is called cellular respiration. Cellular respiration consists of 4 stages: glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, the citric acid cycle (i.e. Krebs cycle), and oxidative phosphorylation. While glucose oxidation is the primary energy source for respiration, other carbohydrates, lipids and proteins can be broken down and processed into various metabolic intermediates that, in turn, can feed into the glycolytic and citric acid cycle pathways.
