Hello!
Scientific names are used to classify organisms in a methodical way. The scientific names prevent misnomers (such as sea horse, which is not a horse). Additionally, it allows scientists who may speak different languages to understand each other. (The word for "skunk" may be a different word in Russian, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin, but the scientific name for "skunk" will be the same throughout the world.) The scientific names are based on evolutionary relationships, so using the scientific name can also help us understand how organisms are related to each other. For example, if two animals have the same genus in their name, then they are fairly closely related.
I hope that helps! If you'd like more help on understanding taxonomy and scientific names, let me know!
