Language and rhetoric were integral to the rise of McCarthyism. McCarthy used fear-mongering tactics to scare the public and amplify concern about communism. He made sweeping generalizations, established an "us vs. them" sentiment, and used inflammatory language like "traitors" and "battle" frequently.
In my opinion, this illustrates how language has been an impetus for many historical movements and events. Throughout history, leaders and politicians have carefully crafted speeches/statements to elicit particular reactions from the public, good or bad.
